[Album of the Week] Capybara - Dave Drusky

When a band names themselves after the largest living rodent on Earth it’s an irresistible talking point. From then on not an interview will pass where a journalist doesn’t inquire about the decision. No discussion will be had with out a mention of it. It’s either genius or pure insanity. As a writer it’s not something you can let slide so I’ll just get that out of the way right now. Luckily, their music is nothing like the loud squeaking noises made by their namesake.

Instead of loud squeaking noises you’ll find tracks full of sunny tropical harmonies, backed by simple driving guitar in full on reverb mode. It’s clear that everyone in this group knows how to play the part. Each song sounds organic yet seamless. Maybe that’s what happens when a group of life long friends gives it a second go and decides to record that album that they’ve always talked about making.

“Neighbor Crimes” the first single off Dave Drusky is bursting with colorful harmonies. As the composition builds and the guitar strikes you find yourself being brought to new heights along with the track. “Wild” slows it down with three chords played slowly in a repetitive manner reverb crying out, less colorful, but just as melodic. The level of sincerity skyrocketing.

Capybara’s attempt at an authentic Sophomore release has paid off. They’ve taken their lush creative process to a whole new level and come out the other end with “Dave Drusky” an album that embraces you with open arms. It’s like waking up to a sunny spring day with every listen. Stream the full album here before it’s official release on February 7th and don’t forget to preorder from insound!
